About this item
- Morning glory, a flowering vine with purple, blue, and pink flowers, grows easily wherever you plant it as long as it gets plenty of sun and a bit of afternoon shade. This annual, hardy in Zones 2-11, is grown from seeds.
- Ipomoea nil has been grown as a decorative plant since the turn of the 20th century. It is also used in folk medicine to treat diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Some of the seed’s qualities include anthelmintic, anticholinergic, antifungal, antispasmodic, antitumor, diuretic, and laxative.
- Morning glories prefer a neutral soil pH of 6.0 to 6.8, although they will grow just about everywhere. However, they bloom more effectively on soil that is not overly rich in organic matter. If the vines appear to be having trouble, you can always add amendments to the soil later.
- Sow seed in early to mid-spring as morning glory needs a long growing season. Before sowing, soak seed overnight in tepid water to soften the hard seed coat.
- Sow seed 1cm deep in pots of moist seed compost and place in a warm spot – ideally a propagator – to germinate.
